Published on January 2, 2026
The 2025 Carters Annual Charity & Not-for-Profit Law Webinar, hosted by Carters Professional Corporation on November 13, 2025, was attended by over 1,270 registered attendees from the charitable and not-for-profit sector across Canada. Carters Professional Corporation is pleased to announce and celebrate its 25th anniversary as a law firm. 25 years later, Carters has expanded more than four-fold to a team of 42 people, including 17 lawyers, an articling student, and 24 support staff. Carters now has offices in Toronto and Ottawa, as well as continuing with its head office in Orangeville. The mission of Carters is the same today as it was in 2001, which is to build and maintain an excellent law firm recognized to be one of the top charity and not-for-profit law firms in Canada, as well as to provide essential adjunct legal services to both its local, national and international charity and not-for-profit clients, in addition to its local and regional clients. In so doing, Carters continues to provide a “one stop” place for legal services as part of its innovative, proactive, and integrated approach to the practice of law. Over the past 25 years, the lawyers at Carters have become thought leaders in charity and not-for-profit law in Canada, as independently recognized by Chambers and Partners (an international lawyer rating service), Best Lawyers in Canada, and Lexpert. In addition, Carters has developed considerable expertise in complementary practice areas of civil litigation, contract law, business law, real estate and leasing , employment , intellectual property , privacy , wills and estates, social enterprise, social finance, as well as risk management, including counterterrorism law for its clients working internationally. In 2003, Carters increased its original office space by taking over the second floor of 211 Broadway in Orangeville. In 2006, Carters continued its need for more office space by extending its operations into the adjoining building at 207 Broadway in Orangeville. In 2008, Carters significantly expanded its scope of operations by opening a downtown Ottawa office, which later relocated to its current location at 117 Centrepointe Drive, Suite 350 in Nepean in 2017. The Ottawa office currently has five lawyers and support staff and focuses on charity and not-for-profit law, intellectual property law, employment law and risk management advice. 10 years later, in 2018, Carters continued to expand its operations by opening its Toronto office at 67 Yonge St, Suite 1402 to better support the firm's growing litigation practice. The Toronto office currently has 2 litigation lawyers and support staff. In 2021, Carters launched the Knowledge Centre on its website at www.carters.ca. The Knowledge Centre provides a centralized source for articles, seminar materials, newsletters, as well as other helpful resource tools, such as risk management checklists that the firm has developed in the area of charity and not-for profit law over the past 25 years. With a solid past and a dedicated focus in providing clients with excellence in legal services, Carters is well positioned and looking forward to the next 25 years, as the firm continues to expand the range of legal services it offers to its clients, including continuing to maintain and build upon its reputation as one of the leading law firms in Canada in the area of charity and not-for profit law. In this regard, Carters continues to help charities and not-for-profits with a focus on an integrated approach to all of their legal needs, whether it be advice on their formation and structuring, ongoing governance, funding, operations, risk management, as well as ongoing regulatory compliance requirements. We are delighted to be able to celebrate our 25th Anniversary as a firm with you. |
